Country Codes for WP Engine GeoIP

After a recent update to WP Engine’s GeoIP plugin (which is available to Business, Premium and Enterprise plans) that added content-based shortcodes, continent shortcodes and testing parameters to allow developers of all stripes take advantage of the API. However, some of the shortcodes for countries may not be as intuitive as they seem. For example, the United Kingdom’s shortcode is “GB”, which is, technically not the same as the UK.

WP Engine uses MaxMind’s legacy ISO 3166 County Codes to dictate country-based calls to the API. The full list of the country codes is available below or the MaxMind site.

Some examples of GeoIP can actually can actually be found on this site. For example, if you spoof the location of China, assets that are otherwise blocked in China by the Great Firewall (Twitter and Instagram widgets) are not loaded at all on the site to help increase the site’s speed in China.
